Notes from a Mars Sermon… God’s Nature

We all know the story of Jonah. A big fish swallowed him because he didn’t want to go preach to the people of Nineveh. He ends up going there and everyone turns away from their wickedness and trusts God.

In Jonah 4:9 it states… God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish. In Hebrew relent and with compassion turn is shuv nacham shum meaning turn repent turn

So, what is the narrator telling us about the nature of God, that he repents? Doesn’t this go against the unchanging nature and being of God?

God mirrors us. He didn’t need to repent—He is perfect but he does it to mirror the people of Nineveh who turned from their evil and repented. God mirrors us so we don’t have to be alone.

What do I want God to mirror so then I can mirror whatever that is to others?
